Today we hosted a webinar for compliance practitioners in the Telecoms industry. Convercent Chief Strategy Officer Philip Winterburn spoke with Yvonne Hilst, Ethics and Compliance Officer at VEON, and Steve Helvin, Managing Associate General Counsel at Verizon, on how their compliance teams are responding to new risks within the industry, particular in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic and attendant financial downturn.
One attendee asked, "Many organisations are reliant on services provided by third party partners. Due to the circumstances they also encountered many challenges which could potentially lead to a loosening of controls (e.g. data protection and home working). The short time frame of the lock down announcements didn't allow for formal changes of contracts and it is therefore a grey matter as to where the responsibility lies (accountability at the end is with the telco). What is your experience around this and best practice examples for dealing with this? These 3rd parties are often not located in the same jurisdiction as the telco which adds additional complexities."
